Rory McIlroy’s club head comes off in bizarre moment at BMW PGA Championship

“I’ve never seen that in person!”

Rory McIlroy experienced a moment of madness during his round at the BMW PGA Championship today when his club broke in half after impact on an approach shot.

The Race to Dubai leader hit his 2nd shot on the par 5 12th hole and the head of his 8-iron came flying off and landed about five feet ahead of him on the fairway.

Testament to McIlroy’s talent and ability, it turned out to be a near-perfect shot as the ball rolled onto the green and ended up within 10 feet of the hole.

As the camera panned back to the Northern Irishman’s face, he looked stunned as he held up what remained of his golf club.

Broadcaster Alison Whitaker summed it up, telling viewers: “Never in your life, yet somehow still pulls off the shot”.

McIlroy finished the hole a club down but with a well-deserved birdie that moved him into a share of the lead at the BMW PGA Championship at five-under par.

If it happened to one of us down at our local club on a Sunday afternoon, it would probably be enough to ruin our day.

It’s a different story for the pros however, as McIlroy was filmed handing his broken iron to a referee as he came off the 12th green, who couriered it back to the TaylorMade tour truck on the range for it to be quickly repaired and returned to the four-time major champion.
