US Ryder Cup fans turn on McIlroy after comments on ‘attention-seeking’ DeChambeau

The pot is already being stirred.

And just like that, we are less than a week away from the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage, New York.

It feels like each edition of the tournament between Europe and the US is more anticipated than the last, but this year does feel special, given the strength of both sides, the characters on each team, and an iconic venue with what will be a raucous crowd.

Europe’s star player is, of course, Rory McIlroy, with the County Down man on a high after arguably his best ever year, which included his Grand Slam completion at the Masters by beating out Bryson DeChambeau, a Players Championship, and the recent Irish Open.

It has been an incredible redemption, given what took place at last year’s US Open, when he conspired to lose the tournament to DeChambeau over the final few holes.

Speaking in a bumper interview with the Guardian’s Ewan Murray, McIlroy responded to DeChambeau’s claims that he will “chirp in the ear” of McIlroy at Bethpage.

The Holywood man said: “I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.”

On social media, however, US fans did not respond too kindly.
