Fighting talk!

Never one to shy away from off-the-course argy bargy, Rory McIlroy has claimed that there will be a repeat of sorts of the last Ryder Cup’s, high-profiled fight between himself and caddies Joe LaCava and Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay.

2023 saw Europe’s leading player argue with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie LaCava during their match, before the war of words spilled over to the car park with Justin Thomas’ bag man, Mackay.

In an interview with the Guardian’s Ewan Murray, McIlroy stated that there will an incident in the upcoming tournament, which begins on Friday, September 26.

He said: “It is not planned. It is not as if any of this is premeditated.

“I think it’s inevitable something is going to happen in New York. It might not involve me but it is inevitable that something will happen, whether like in Rome last time or something else.

“I just think when you go into that environment and you are there for five or six days and the crowd are on you for eight hours, so many days in a row … it is inevitable it will get to someone or get to us as a group at some point. We are just going to have to do a really good job of managing that, having each other’s backs and protecting each other.”

McIlroy also responded to claims that rival Bryson DeChanbeau said that he would be “chirping in the ear” of the County Down man during the event.

The Holywood man added: “I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.”
