Jason Day’s amazing gesture to a golf journalist could very well make him the nicest man in golf

What a man

Darragh Murphy

Jason Day deserves two US PGA Championships.

We always had the new World Number 3 pegged as a sound fella but with this story, told by Guardian golf correspondent Lawrence Donegan on Off The Ball last night, he may actually be the loveliest man in all of sport.

PGA Championship - Final Round

“One of the journalists is out on tour all the time and he’s not got a lot of money and he used to turn up every day with a shirt. So he’d have a red shirt for a Monday and a blue shirt for a Tuesday and Day eventually cottoned on to this and asked ‘How many shirts have you got?’ And he said, ‘Seven. One for every day of the week’ and Day said ‘meet me next week.’

“Day turned up the next week with 40 top quality golf shirts. He’s got a new sponsor and these were all the shirts from when he didn’t have a brand new sponsor and he gave them to the guy. I’d think that’s such a great story.”

That is a great story and Day deserves endless applause for it.

And just in case you’re reading this Jason, we’re not exactly spoiled for choice with shirts ourselves. Just sayin’.
