All he wanted was a high five from Jordan Spieth…

Just a bit too eager

Darragh Murphy

This gentleman had far too much faith in a feeble fence that was about two feet high.

One golf fan at Royal Birkdale was confident that his body weight would be supported by the fence that separated the punters from Jordan Spieth’s victory lap.

Spieth had just put the finishing touches on a dramatic final round which saw him threaten to throw away a lead only for the 23-year-old to pull off a late display of composure to claim the 2017 British Open.

A 35ft putt for eagle on the 15th settled the nerves that were beginning to show and there was no last-gasp fightback from Matt Kuchar, as Spieth tightened his grip on the claret jug.

On a Sunday that could have so easily descended into meltdown mode, Spieth proved yet again why he is one of the greatest golfers walking the planet.

And everybody wanted a piece of him as he celebrated his victory.

One spectator reached out his hand for a high five from the world number three. He stretched. He leaned. He begged for the honour of having his palm meet Spieth’s.

And it all went tits up.

The fan saw the funny side of the incident but he’ll have to wait for that high five because Spieth wanted precisely no part of speaking to someone who couldn’t even manage to stay upright.
