Bray, Walsh and Mackey nominated for the top award in camogie

Niall McIntyre

Miriam Walsh, Katrina Mackey and Lorraine Bray are three nominees for the PwC GPA Camogie Player of the Year for 2022.

Having starred in the All-Ireland final with three points from play, Tullaroan’s Walsh is the favourite to win the award though she faces stiff competition from Mackey and Bray, who also had outstanding seasons for Cork and Waterford respectively.

Cork’s Mackey also scored three points from play in that final, a game Kilkenny won by a point, while Bray was Waterford’s leading light in an impressive season for Derek Lyons’ charges that saw them reach their first All-Ireland semi-final since 1959.

The Cappoquin player usually lines out at midfield for the Déise, and is one of their chief score-getters. Kilkenny’s Katie Nolan can count herself unlucky not to be nominated, having won Player of the Match in the All-Ireland final to cap off another fine campaign. Nolan hit 0-11 from the quarter final to the final of the competition.

Elsewhere, in the intermediate grade, champions Galway have two players nominated in Lisa Casserly and Niamh McPeake, the Tribeswomen facing competition from Cork’s Joanne Casey. Meanwhile, at junior level, Antrim are guaranteed to win the award with their trio Dervla Cosgrove, Aine Graham and Emma Laverty set to battle it out.

The winners of the PwC GPA Camogie Players of the Year in all three grades will be announced at the PwC Camogie All-Stars on November 26th at Croke Park.
