WATCH: Preposterously good free kick in the 93rd minute gave Mexico’s U20s the latest of wins

Balls of steel

We’ve tried to put ourselves in this position in our head and every time we’ve belted the ball into the wall.

But Kevin Gutierrez is made of sterner stuff as he gave Mexico their first win in Group D of the U20 World Cup with a sublime free kick right at the death.

At 1-1 in injury time, Uruguay’s Eric Cabaco saw red for a second yellow card but Los Charrúas must have felt that it was too late to be punished for losing a man.

Then up stepped Gutierrez.

The 20-year-old Querétaro defender showed the steely nerve of a veteran and simply floated a left-footed effort onto the underside of the crossbar which beat the Uruguay keeper all ends up and steal all three points.

What makes it so satisfying to see the ball bounce in off the crossbar? It’s so much sexier than normal goals.
