WATCH: Martin Skrtel takes off from inside own half en route to scoring absolute cracker

So, this actually happened

Ben Kiely

Remember Martin Skrtel, Liverpool fans?

Of course you do, he only left Anfield for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig in 2016.

Unless you’re donning some very freshly-made rose-tinted glasses, you’ll remember the shaven-headed Serbian as a slightly sub-par defender. You couldn’t fault his loyalty, he was a loyal servant to Liverpool for eight seasons, but the general consensus when he did leave was that it was probably the right time for it.

So, just to reiterate, everyone should remember him as a defender.

Surprise, surprise, Skrtel is still playing as a defender at Fenerbahce, but there’s one major difference – he’s like Leo fuckin’ Messi with the ball at his feet.

At least that’s judging from this sensational solo effort he scored during his side’s match against Konyaspor on St Patrick’s Day.

Skrtel took possession of the ball inside his own half, then just took off quicker than Forrest Gump towards the opposition. Just like the titular Ping Pong champion/war hero/Shrimp empire king/Elvis Presley choreographer, Skrtel just refused to stop running.

He skipped past four players until he got to… eh, ‘close enough’ to the edge of the box and decided to have a crack at goal. The goalkeeper got a paw to his low, drilled effort, but there was enough force behind it to take it into the back of the net.

Despite his stunner, Fenerbahce still lost the game 3-2, so maybe he is just as bad at defending as we all remember.
