There’s more to life than football.

And, true to the class of the club, Liverpool offered heartfelt condolences to Rio Ferdinand and the family of Rebecca Ellison who sadly passed away last night.

The QPR player’s wife lost her short battle with cancer and, despite an important clash for both clubs at Anfield this afternoon, they put aside what is ultimately just a game of football.

Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, presented QPR skipper, Joey Barton, with flowers ahead of the game on behalf of the club in memory of Rebecca and for her family at such a sad time.

A nice touch in difficult circumstances.

Gerrard missed a second-half penalty for Liverpool and his side were on course for a 1-1 draw before he came up with a clutch score.

‘To be honest with you,’ he told Setanta Sports, ‘I changed my mind in the run-up.’

He headed home from a corner with four minutes to play, sealing a 2-1 win.
