That’s why Steven Gerrard’s criticism of one of his former teammate’s flaws on the pitch came as such a breath of fresh air for us.
The departing Liverpool captain gave an interview to Match of the Day host Gary Lineker about the magic of the FA Cup and his experience with the iconic competition.
Gerrard won the cup twice, in 2001 and more famously in 2006 when one of his most memorable goals flew in past West Ham ‘keeper Shake Hislop in the 91st minute to set up penalties.
Arguaby the highlight of interview with the LA Galaxy-bound midfielder came in the 4th minute when he couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at his former teammate Michael Owen.
Gerrard conceded that Owen was a “top player” and “the best at running behind” but he admitted that he would shower the forward with abuse when he came short to collect the ball from midfield.
He said: “I used to slaughter him for coming short because he was crap when he came short!”
True that Stevie, true bloody that.
