VIDEO: Roberto Martinez is refreshingly honest about Funes Mori’s tackle on Divock Origi

"He got carried away"

Fair play.

It was a horrible night for Roberto Martinez.

He’s under serious pressure as it is at Everton. He lost 4-0 to Merseyside rivals Liverpool. One of his players got sent off for a horror challenge on Divock Origi and said player now misses the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.

But Martinez fronted up about Ramiro Funes Mori’s tackle on the Liverpool striker that left a sour taste in a lot of mouths.

“I just feel like it is a challenge that he should be avoiding,” Martinez told Sky Sports after the game. “You’re getting carried away with the emotion of the derby. It’s the first time that Ramiro is involved in this sort of game and he got carried away.”

And, whilst the speculation of his future at the club continues to mount, the manager wasn’t hiding from that either.

“It’s a feeling of embarrassment. We know we shouldn’t put in a showing like this. Sometimes in football you can’t control a chain of events. We proved that to ourselves, conceding those two goals in three minutes just before half time. We should be much better than that.

“From that point on, the focus, having a semi-final around the corner affects you as a player.

“It’s tough but we’re going to face this adversity and make up for that performance today in front of our fans at Wembley.”
