"This race is not over"

To say that Jurgen Klopp was animated following Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat in Spain would be an understatement.

There was an electricity to the German’s voice as he reacted to the Adrian Lopez winner that came at the death of the Reds’ semi-final first leg tie at Villarreal.

Liverpool defended diligently until the solitary goal of the game which arrived in the 92nd minute, meaning that Villarreal will bring a lead with them to Anfield next Thursday.

But Klopp was adamant that the tie was far from over and that his side would come out firing in the return leg.

He told BT Sport: “I’m not happy with the goal we conceded in the last second or something.

“Of course counter attacking in the 92nd minute makes not too much sense to be honest.

“There was no offside with Adam Lallana so we did not have the luck today but it’s only the first half.

“It’s 1-0, they have to come to Anfield and they know how strong we are. I thought we would have more problems here. We defended really well, we had our moments and played football.

“Now we know more and this race is not over.”

As defiant as Klopp was for a turnaround on Merseyside, he did single out full back Alberto Moreno who was caught out of position by the pass in the build-up to the goal.

“There is no explanation for this,” Klopp said. “They played one chip ball on the back of Kolo and Alberto is not there – I don’t know where he was – so that was really fortuitous and that makes really no sense but that was the only big mistake we made in the game.

“Ok they scored from it and we have to accept it, no problem. I’d have liked to have seen the situation with Lallana and let him go, maybe we’d have scored.

“95 minutes have been played but we’ll play 97 at Anfield and that’s a different game there.”
