VIDEO: German third tier sees goal scored by robot footballer, well … player with defibrillator

Amazing story...

Darragh Murphy

We thought we’d heard everything football had to offer.

Turns out we were hadn’t but we could never have foreseen the day when we’d have a player score to reveal a defibrillator under his jersey.

Well that’s precisely what happened in this game in Germany’s third tier when Daniel Engelbrecht scored the winner for Stuttgart Kickers.

The player has been forced to sport the device due to an incident last season when he suffered a heart attack that led to a total of four surgeries.

But of course ol’ Danny Elgelbrecht is made of tough stuff and refused to call time on his playing career, ignoring doctors’ advice.

To be fair, he’s being used sparingly this season and has been given just a few minutes of playing time every game, normally towards the end.

The defibrillator is a precautionary measure that the player wears just in case he was to face a resurgence of his previous heart problems and we applaud him for having the determination to take the risk to do what he loves.

It’s an heartwarming (we had to) story though and shows that a bum ticker is no reason to call it a day. The message unveiled when he took off his jersey translates to “Nothing is impossible”.

We think it’s more of a philosophical statement of dedication than a shameless plug for Adidas.
