Utrecht player receives marching orders for comedic jerk move from the substitutes’ bench

He definitely deserved it

You can only laugh at the second yellow Lukas Gortler received from the Utrecht substitutes’ bench.

Utrecht drew 0-0 with Ajax in the Eredivisie on Saturday, but no one was talking about the scoreline at the final whistle. The main talking point came from an incident that occurred in stoppage time.

The goalless scoreline was favourable for the hosts. Ajax were in second place heading into the match while Utrecht were lodged in the middle of the table. Any result at all would have been a success. That is perhaps why Lukas Gortler made that decision at the 90 +1 mark.

Gortler started the match, but was taken off as a substitute. When the ball came rolling towards his direction, he stood up from his seat, reached down over the advertisement hoarding and picked it up. He then held onto it for dear life to prevent Justin Kluivert from taking a quick throw-in.

A wrestling match ensued with Kluivert grabbing hold of Gortler until he let go of the ball. The referee showed both men yellow cards over the incident. However, since Gortler was booked during the game, he received his marching orders.

Remarkably, Utrecht had a player sent off with a second yellow without being reduced to 10 men. They finished with 11 on the pitch and closed out the goalless draw to share the spoils.
