When a volley is presented to kids nowadays in the playground, “Rooneeeey” is the likely cry on contact.
But back in the 1990s, “Yeboaaaah” was the roar that accompanied rash volleys that flew 30 yards over the crossbar.
The Leeds cult hero scored two goals that will forever headline Premier League highlight clips over a matter of weeks in 1995.
On August 21, Yeboah rendered David James redundant when he walloped a first time volley into the back of the Liverpool net.
33 days later, the Ghanaian somehow managed to recapture his volleying prowess when he controlled the ball with his chest, juggled it past Wimbledon defenders before lashing it in off the underside of the crossbar.
And 20 years on, the debate continues to rage as to which goal is better.
When asked if the Wimbledon golazo is better than his Anfield netbuster, Yeboah said “I don’t think so. Liverpool was the best goal. Why do I think that? Because it was live on television and everyone was watching. It surprised people. Also, I grew up as a Liverpool fan and their team had Rush, Barnes, players I admired.
“Wimbledon was all about control and if we’re talking technically, that is probably the best goal. But it’s about feeling and emotion as well, no? So it’s Liverpool. That was the one.”
And to what does Yeboah credit his ludicrous ability to strike a ball? Yorkshire puddings of course.
“I had no idea what they were,” he said. “But I loved them. I used to say that it was the Yorkshire puddings that gave me the strength to score goals. It was just fun. My feet scored the goals. And my mind.”
So there you have it, Yorkshire puddings make for great strikers and Yeboah v Liverpool>Yeboah v Wimbledon.
