Tick, tick, tick: It’s the Deadline Day lunchtime yellow ticker of bullshit

Maradona to Sligo

Mikey Stafford

Little more than 10 hours left to suffer.

Is it just us or does the yellow furniture and the presenter’s hyperbole get louder with each SLAMMING shut of the transfer window?

Let’s be honest, the whole thing peaked with the Fernando Torres-Andy Carroll-£50million clusterf**k back in 2011 and ever since then Sky Sports News have just been chasing the dragon.

So, we have poor Longford AFC defender Stuart Pearce being asked to discuss Jordan Rhodes’ prospective move from Blackburn to Middlesbrough, while the ticker breathlessly informs us that Cardiff have snapped up Kenneth Zohore on loan from KV Kortrijk.

Meanwhile Saido Berahino digs his diamond-encrusted heels in at West Bromwich Albion as he resists a move in the wrong direction (in every sense) to Newcastle United. Even if he does get his desired move to London and Tottenham, an unsettled six-goal striker moving from WBA to Spurs, it doesn’t quite compete with Chelsea paying £50m for Liverpool’s iconic striker and the Reds immediately signing Newcastle’s spasmodic striker. Bullshit rating: 2/5.

That’s not to say there are not outlandish stories to consider, of course there are. As long as agents have 15% shares to pocket there will be rumours to circulate.

One of our favourites is the Daily Mail’s suggestion that Swansea or Leicester City would countenance a move for 32-year-old headache Robinho. The Brazilian is available as a free agent after his contract with Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande came to its inevitable conclusion.

Six years since he played for Manchester City, can Robinho cut it in the Premier League? He did score 16 goals in 53 appearances for City, but is he the type of character Claudio Ranieri wants to introduce into Leicester’s tight-knit squad. Bullshit rating: 4/5.

Beyond Aiden McGeady‘s inevitable slide into the Championship, the Irish interest appears to centre around Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley’s fight for Alan Judge – despite the Irish midfielder expressing a desire to stay at BrentfordBullshit rating: 2/5.

The Mirror have Sunderland potentially hijacking Aston Villa’s month-long, underwhelming pursuit of injury-prone Arsenal reserve full-back Mathieu Debuchy. Or will it be Manchester United? Either scenario is just so desperately tragic for the league’s bottom club that it must be true. Bullshit rating 0/5.

If you’re looking for some bona fide news: Everton have agreed terms with Lokomotic Moscow over striker Oumar Niasse, while Watford are on the verge of signing Rennes midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Hair-raising stuff.
