PICS: Liverpool’s famous Shankly Gates in new location following Anfield renovation

Liverpool will play their first home match of the 2016/17 season this weekend following the expansion of Anfield over the summer.

The stadium held just under 46,000 spectators last season, but work carried out over the past few months means 54,167 seats will be available for the visit of champions Leicester City on Saturday evening.

One of the biggest questions with regard to the redevelopment work concerned the famous Shankly Gates, erected in honour of the manager who delivered three league titles and several other trophies to Anfield in the 1960s and 1970s.

The gates went up in 1982, the year after the Scot passed away, but were removed from their Anfield Road berth and placed into storage in February 2015 as work was carried out on the ground.

And now the club has revealed a new location for the gates – at the entrance to the Centenary Stand, where the family of the much-loved manager now sit.

The Hillsborough memorial, synonymous with the gates in their previous location, has also been relocated after being placed into storage last season.

Liverpool operations director Andrew Parkinson revealed that the club worked closely with the Shankly family before deciding on the new location for the iconic gates.

“The gates are a fantastic tribute to my granddad’s outstanding contribution to the football club,” Shankly’s granddaughter Pauline Robinson told the club site.

“He loved the club and the supporters. We’d like to thank them for involving us in finding their new location.”

Liverpool’s meeting with Leicester on Saturday comes after the club played their first three Premier League games away from home.

They currently sit 11th in the Premier League with one win, one draw and one defeat from those three fixtures.
