Sporting Lisbon’s glaringly obvious jersey errors at the weekend were deliberate

Old school Pro Evo-esque

Ben Kiely

It turns out Sporting Lisbon’s kitman didn’t have an absolute mare on Saturday.

Anyone watching the Primeira Liga clash between Sporting CP and Arouca on Saturday (we know there’s a lot of you out there) will have noticed something odd about the home side’s jerseys.

Every single member of Sporting’s starting lineup wore shirts that had their names spelled incorrectly on the back.

For example, ‘Guterres’ was written on the back of Teo Gutierrez’s jersey while Joao Mario’s shirt read ‘J.Dario’, as if they were playing in some sort of old school Pro Evolution Soccer reality where they couldn’t quite get the licencing for the players’ names.

Unsurprisingly, the misspelled player names was not a mistake, it was a stunt organised by the club as part of their campaign to discourage fans from buying counterfeit merchandise.
