Wednesday have been up for sale since October when former owner Dejphon Chansiri handed over control of the club to administrators.

Per Sky Sports, an email was received on Wednesday which is “claimed to come from” COH Sports, the American owners of the Blades.

The email is reported to have enquired about an asking price for the purchase of the historic club.

It is still possible that the email was a ‘spoof’ due to the fact that United’s American owners are yet to make an official comment regarding the proposal.

Any potential merger is likely to be blocked by the EFL, and Sky Sports report, that neither the EFL nor the new Football Regulator would allow it to happen.

Sheffield Wednesday and United are two of the oldest clubs in football history, with a rivalry that dates back more than 130 years, as a result any potential merger is expected to deeply anger both sets of supporters.
