Shamrock Rovers confirm the transfer of Bazunu to Manchester City

Jack O'Toole

Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the departure of 16-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to Manchester City.

The news first broke last year after a string of impressive display for the Hoops in the League of Ireland but the move was officially confirmed by the club on Friday with Sporting Director Stephen McPhail wishing the young shotstopper the best of luck with his move to Manchester.

“Gavin has completed the move earlier than we originally expected and we wish Gavin all the very best in his career development at City,” McPhail told the club’s website.

“Whilst we originally planned for Gavin to stay at Rovers until July and see out his education to complete his Leaving Certificate at our education partner Ashfield College, arrangements have been made to accommodate Gavin doing his studies and moving to Manchester. Working with Gavin, his family and the other parties involved we are happy that this is the best scenario for Gavin and for the football club.”

Bazunu will join Ireland underage international Tyreke Wilson at the club. The Hoops will play their final pre-season friendly on Friday against a Brentford selection with kick-off set for 7.30pm in Tallaght Stadium.
