The Mirror is reporting that Ryan Giggs, who previously took charge of first team affairs when David Moyes was sacked, will walk out of the club, unless he is offered the job if/when van Gaal is sacked.
The newspaper reports that there is a fear that Giggs, who has been at the club for 28 years, may walk-out unless he is given the job above other candidates such as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
Van Gaal remains in his position for now, and returned from Holland on Tuesday to take charge of training ahead of the club's FA Cup fourth round clash with Derby.
