Ravel Morrison is closing in on a return to English football

Back closer to home

More than two years have passed since Ravel Morrison last played 90 minutes in English football, but the former Manchester United youngster could be on his way back.

Despite impressing in pre-season, the 23-year-old has not played a competitive game for Lazio since April.

He has now parted ways with the Italian club, and a move back close to his Manchester home could be on the cards, five years since he left Old Trafford for West Ham United.

Morrison is training with Wigan Athletic, the club have confirmed, though a deal for the player will depend on his ability to prove his fitness.

The Championship club, currently six points adrift of safety, are managed by former Manchester United reserve coach Warren Joyce.

Joyce was in charge of United’s second string from 2010-2016, and worked with Morrison for the early part of that stint.

“There were players like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and the Keanes coming through at that time, and he was possibly the star player ability-wise, so it’s one that’s worth looking at for us so we can assess where he is at this stage of his career,” Joyce said.

“We know he has talent but it’s all about how quick we can get him up to the levels we need him to be at here.”

Wigan take on Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup this weekend, before returning to league action against fellow strugglers Burton Albion.
