United suffered a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham at the weekend after Ruben Amorim's squad was hit with injury woes - a result which saw them slump to 15th in the table.

Ange Postecoglou's side have also put in a lacklustre display this season but the win lifted them to 12th in the table.

However, both teams are a prime example of how money can't buy you happiness... or good results!

Both teams are poised to deliver their worst seasons in years, even decades, an unfathomable feat given the money they've spent in the past six years.

Even before Ineos' arrival, United have spent recklessly and without direction, something which is proving costly on the field as well as off it.

Since 2019, United have spent a net amount of £810 million, the most in the Premier League.

Chelsea came second with a net spend of £739m but not far behind in third is Spurs, who have spent £576m and have nothing to show for it - at least United have an FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the cabinet during that time.

The Red Devils have actually spent more than a billion since 2019. 

During that time, the team has had several managers and has seen some of the poorest recruitment decisions.

For example, Jadon Sancho was recruited for £72m but failed to impress and is now trying to find form on loan at Chelsea.

Antony was signed for more than £80m and has struggled to deliver, though he is flourishing on loan at Real Betis.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag spent a combined £140m to sign Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund in successive summers.

Ex-red Gary Neville previously declared Old Trafford a 'graveyard' for players as so many of their star signings have failed to deliver while others have been moved on for a huge loss.

The table shows Arsenal have invested well as they sit second in the Premier League and fourth in the net spend table with a figure of £563m.

However, League leaders Liverpool are testament to the fact that you don't need to spend a lot to win a lot coming in tenth with a figure of £212m.
