M is for McGrath

Ben Kiely

Maybe if this had been around when I was a wee lad, I wouldn’t be illiterate.

Check out this great piece by freelance illustrator Steve Walsh, in which he’s found a way to sportsify (I told you I was illiterate) the alphabet.

Gone be the days of children learning their ABCs from Sammy Snake and his merry band of Letter Land characters. Instead, you can now teach your young ‘uns how to read and write while simultaneously teaching them about some of the greats of the beautiful game with this improved, football alphabet.

It should hold a special place in our hearts, in particular, as Irish soccer legend Paul McGrath made the cut. The former defender saw off the likes of Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and to a lesser extent, Javier Mascherano to claim the coveted “M is for…” spot.

Take that Argentina.
