Lucky to get nil

Micronesia we never knew you

But boy do we feel sorry for you this morning, after the tiny Pacific island followed up their last two record breaking hammering with another massive defeat last night.

The team have been on the receiving end of some record breaking losses in the last week, and that trend continued last night as they got whipped 46-0 by Vanuatu in their third straight loss in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

‘Hero’ of the night was  Jean Kaltack who top scored with 16 goals, and got to take home five match balls as a result (maybe).

The island nation were hammered by Tahiti 30-0 and 38-0 at the Pacific Games in the last seven days, which acts as a qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympics in Brazil.

Micronesia is not a Fifa member so it is not officially the worse ever defeat in international football, while the competition is also only at U23 level.

And despite conceding 114 goals in just three games, the manager of the team is happy that organisers have decided to invite them back for the event again.

Australian Stan Foster is delighted his side will get a chance to try and atone for their hammerings in the near future,

“I got the really good news yesterday that we will be allowed to come back and compete in the next Pacific Games. That was big relief for me, because I was really worried the organisers would take us out of the competition because of our scores.”

“I’ve been assured that we’ll be allowed to come back and that they’re aware that this is a development squad. They’re boys, not men. And they’ve been playing against well-seasoned men. I’m hoping the majority of our boys will be here for at least eight years.”
