Who said that footballers only care about money?

Former Republic of Ireland international Paddy Kenny has proven that there is still some honour left in the game after cancelling his Bury contract on Thursday.

Kenny had signed a short-term deal with the Shakers less than a fortnight ago before tearing his calf in training this week.

The injury would have meant that Kenny would have sat on the bench for the duration of his seven-week contract but receiving pay without working was not something that interested the stopper and he asked for his contract to be terminated.

Bury manager David Flitcroft explained Kenny’s decision.

“Paddy only had a seven week contract,” Flitcroft told Shakers PlayerHD. “We weren’t expecting it, but Paddy came to see us and said that he loves the club, he loves the fact we gave him an opportunity, but he doesn’t feel like he is going to earn his money now he is injured.

“Quite incredibly he has decided he wants to cancel the contract.

“Incredibly he had guaranteed money there, but he has said he can’t take money off the football club, which is quite a unique circumstance.”

What a guy!
