Michael Owen didn’t receive the warmest of receptions at Liverpool charity match

Liverpool supporters once adored Michael Owen.

Plenty still do have a soft spot for their former forward, who scored 158 goals in 297 appearances for the Reds, but Owen will be well aware of the fact that he’s no longer universally loved by the Anfield faithful.

The decision to move to Manchester United in 2009 was always going to be an unpopular one and Owen has gradually continued to go down in Liverpool supporters’ estimations in the years since.

Last May, a petition was started to campaign for Owen to be removed from his role as Liverpool’s international ambassador due to the fact that he referred to United as “we” during their Europa League final victory over Ajax.

Owen’s comments on Karim Benzema and Joe Gomez have only served to make him even less liked on Merseyside but he was drafted into a Liverpool Legends XI for a charity game against Bayern Munich this weekend.

After pulling on the famous red jersey again, Owen quickly discovered where he stands among his former supporters as his was the only name that was met with some jeers when the teamsheets were read out.

Owen did get on the scoresheet with a tap-in early on in the thrilling 5-5 draw but fans just couldn’t get over the fact that he spent three years calling Old Trafford his home.
