He’s out the gap.

After seven and a half years at Arsenal, Mesut Özil has all but confirmed he will be leaving the club in the coming days to join his boyhood club Fenerbahçe.

News broke on Saturday morning that he had agreed a deal in principle with Arsenal to terminate his contract that had six months to run and let him leave for free.

All the clues pointed towards Özil heading to Turkey, his family’s homeland, and signing for his boyhood club Fenerbahçe. That now looks all but certain to come true in the coming days after a teasing Twitter exchange.

Fenerbahçe’s official Twitter account tweeted, in Turkish, lyrics to a song: “Come Let Us Be Night With Day” followed by some musical emojis.

Özil then responded by quoting the tweet, and posting heart emojis in the yellow and blue of the club, followed by a sand timer emoji.

It’s only a matter of time.

He has not yet changed his Twitter bio, which still says he plays for Arsenal, but the colours of his profile picture now reflect the yellow and navy of Fenerbahçe.

This brings an end to the nightmare that his spell at Arsenal had become, but it didn’t have to end this way.
