Memphis Depay better be worth all the hassle because he is causing many a football fan an awful lot of strife as the summer approaches.
Since the World Cup, the Dutch star, hailed in some corners (mostly by whoever thinks they’re getting him) as the next Cristiano, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford to hook up with his former international boss, Louis van Gaal.
Those rumours gathered more and more pace until Brendan Rodgers looked to be lining up a sneaky bid to try and prize the PSV attacker to Liverpool.
Then, his agent tweets a picture at United’s training ground.
But, whilst Depay then moved to clear up the nonsense and confirm that he has not been speaking to Manchester United, he was just as quick to fuel the fire again when he hinted at a move away from Holland.
Speaking after PSV’s 3-2 victory yesterday away to Excelsior, Depay quashed rumours before starting his own new ones.
He scored as well. Of course he did. And it was only a bloody gorgeous free kick.

“There’s absolutely no truth in that. I haven’t spoken to Manchester United,” he said.
“On that question [speaking to clubs in coming weeks], I am not going to comment. We shall see how things will go.
“It would be great to go to one of the big competitions this summer, but for now I don’t want to speak about that. These are my honest answers to you media guys.
“If that would become reality [a big-money transfer], it would be fantastic. It is a dream to make a transfer with such a big impact.
“But I already said, there is a lot of speculation and a lot of stories, but I don’t know how things will work out, so let’s wait and see.”
