Graham Carey will be one of the biggest Liverpool fans on the pitch on Wednesday night.
The Dubliner is a lifelong Reds supporter and will line-out against Jurgen Klopp’s side for the second time in two weeks.
Carey was part of the Plymouth Argyle team that frustrated the Reds at Anfield two Sundays ago in the FA Cup third-round, and it was a special occasion for the 27-year-old midfielder.
“It was unbelievable before the game,” Carey said after the goalless draw.
“When they started singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, I was getting shivers. It was unbelievable. Growing up, I always dreamed of playing here. To be unbeaten here is even better.”
Carey is enjoying a brilliant campaign with Plymouth, and has scored 10 goals in 31 games already this season for the League Two side. Including this spectacular effort earlier in the season.
The Dubliner joined Plymouth from Ross County in the summer of 2015, and was named the club’s player of the year last season, when he scored 12 goals in 46 games.
Carey had something of a nomadic career before that. He joined Celtic from Dublin Schoolboy side Mountview in 2005, but made just one appearance in six years. He had loan moves to Bohemians, St Mirren and Huddersfield during that time.
Carey moved to the south west of England following a two-year spell with Scottish club Ross County.
The 27-year-old has a nice habit of scoring wonder goals.
The home fans among the sell-out crowd that will be crammed into Plymouth’s Home Park on Wednesday night for the FA Cup replay will hope Carey does something special against the team he grew up supporting.
Carey claims he has been heavily influenced by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who scored a few spectacular FA Cup goals in his time.
“When I was younger I played as a central midfielder and Steven Gerrard was one of the players who I modelled myself on in that dynamic style of always running forward,” Carey said.
He also admitted that he was so caught-up in the emotion of the first game between the teams at Anfield last Sunday, he almost sang the famous Liverpool song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
“Yeah (I nearly joined in),” Carey said.
“I wish I had a scarf on! No, it was great. I mean I have come here as a fan and had chills on the back of my neck.”
Plymouth had just 23 per cent possession at Anfield as Liverpool’s young team failed to break down the away side’s spirited and well-organised defence.
Klopp has said he will stick with his young players for Wednesday’s replay. Plymouth, who are currently second in League Two, could cause an upset against the team who have yet to win in 2017.
If Dubliner Carey was to score the winner against Liverpool, the team he grew up supporting, it would be one of the stories of the season.
