Underage coach pens brilliant open letter to parents on the reality of the voluntary job

The highs and the lows

Ben Kiely

Anyone who’s ever volunteered to coach a team at any level, should be able to relate to this.

Mayo club Westport United posted an open letter by a voluntary underage coach which has been doing the rounds on social media. Although it was written back in 2010, it is sadly still applicable today.

The writer gives an honest take on the rewarding nature of the job, but also asks parents to think twice before angrily voicing their criticism, without a fully understanding the sacrifices what the job entails.

It’s long one but it’s certainly worth reading. (Click on the image if the font is too small)
