Jose Mourinho is in situ and he’s not the only change to the Old Trafford scenery that could take place this summer.
Sevilla’s sporting director Monchi is regarded as one of the great transfer operators in the modern game. And, according to a report in AS, he has just told Sevilla he wants to leave.
The Spanish outlet also notes that “Manchester United are particularly keen to acquire the Spaniard’s services, as José Mourinho is a big admirer of Monchi’s successful recruitment policy at Sevilla.”
Ed Woodward has been responsible for negotiating transfers at Old Trafford in recent years and, it’s fair to say, most fans would welcome a change.
Monchi, a former goalkeeper at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, has overseen the establishment of Sevilla’s current business model whereby they buy low or and sell very high.
Sevilla have turned into one of the most profitable clubs in Spain in terms of their recruitment policy and Monchi has been the man responsible for the sale of such players as Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Ramos, Jesús Navas, Alberto Moreno, Luis Alberto and José Antonio Reyes, all for massive profit.
Monchi has been a massive part of Sevilla’s recent successes as they have famously cemented themselves as Europa League specialists, winning their third consecutive Europa League by besting Liverpool in this season’s final.
That trophy was Sevilla’s ninth in the last decade and Monchi’s ability to spot talent, secure bargains and nurture an altogether sounder approach to the transfer market has made him a man in high demand.
The €200m profit he has earned for the club has also resulted in Manchester United fans getting very excited at the prospect of seeing him appointed as director of football at Old Trafford before the summer is out.
