Great news.

Irish women’s football has been given a significant boost as one of the country’s top players has signed for Manchester City.

Megan Campbell has put pen to paper on a deal that will see her commit her future to the club for the foreseeable future.

The Ireland international is regarded as one of the best players in the current national team, and the 22-year-old moves to the north of England after completing her scholarship at Florida State University.

The defender was highly rated in America and played more than 60 times for Florida, while her deadly long throws meant she finished her term stateside with 31 assists to her name.

It also earned her the nickname ‘the new Rory Delap’ from Irish fans.

She was also a title winner with Florida and was named as part of the 2014 ACC All-Tournament Team.

The former Raheny player has 33 caps for her country and has linked up with her new team on their pre-season camp in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking to the Manchester City website, the defender is hopeful of making a big impact at her new club.

“I’ve just graduated and I was looking for a professional team. Fortunately enough, City came in for me and now I’m here!”

“They play the same style of play we did in Florida – keeping the ball on the ground.

“It’s a big step up from college soccer in the States so I’m going to take my time, using my first year to grow as a player and keep progressing.”

And if you thought we were joking about the Rory Delap comparison, then have a look here at her best ‘long-throw’ highlights.
