The banner was revealed during the match

A plane flying a banner including the words “British to be minority” was flown over the Etihad Stadium during Manchester City’s and Liverpool’s Premier League clash on Sunday.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for the home side in the fifth minute, before Diogo Jota levelled proceedings in the 13th minute.

Gabriel Jesus restored City’s lead before the half-time break with a smart finish, however, Liverpool started the second period on top and equalised in the 46th minute when Sadio Mane slotted past Ederson following Mohamed Salah’s inviting pass.

During the match, a banner was spotted by several people watching the game, with a number of supporters and football fans voicing their opinion on social media.

What did the banner say?

The banner read “British To Be Minority By 2066”, with a photo appearing on Twitter during the first-half of the clash between the Premier League’s top two sides.

Adil Ray OBE posted a video of the plane, alongside the caption: “A plane flew over the Etihad with a banner “BRITISH TO BE MINORITY BY 2066”. It’s actually quite scary that these incredibly stupid racists have the money to spend on this. If by British they mean people like them I can’t think of anything better.”

How did social media react?

One Twitter user wrote: “It’s a shame to say, but this doesn’t surprise me. Ever since brexit, this country has been going down the pan”.

A second person replied to Mr Ray, saying: “The police should investigate this, find both the pilot, the air field and who paid for this , and prosecute them all.”

Another added: “How sad and ignorant”.

It comes less than two years after a controversial banner was flown over the Etihad during City’s game against Burnley – which read “White Lives Matter Burnley”.
