Barcelona haven’t been shy in splashing the cash over the last number of years to keep up with Real Madrid and new figures suggest that their deal for Luis Suarez is the most expensive of 2014 by a long, long way. And we mean a long, long way.

The initial transfer fee for the ex-Liverpool man was reported at a massive €94 million but figures published today by Goal suggest his transfer in total could top €251 million at the end of his five year deal.

That’s a lot of money.

The cost is calculated from the transfer fee as well as his wages for the duration of his five year deal which comes in at a just over €62 million.

There is also signing on fees as well as various bonuses which push the transfer to the astronomical figure if all targets are met.

Barcelona have previous form in paying massive money for South Americans as the details of their deal to bring Neymar to Camp Nou were revealed earlier this year and they rival that of Suarez.

They paid an initial €17.1 million to Santos but then bold secret payments to his parents to sweeten the deal of €40 million were revealed bring the cost to €57.1 million

A man has to get paid so over the course of his contract he’s expected to earn €56.7 million which includes a bonus if he finishes in the top three of the Ballon d’Or.

The total is estimated at an eye-watering €114 million.

Manchester United and Chelsea are featured in six of the 10 most expensive transfers as either buyers or sellers.

Angel Di Maria’s move to Old Trafford is set to cost them €238 million, while was clearly the best piece of business done all summer was Chelsea’s decision to offload David Luiz which cost PSG €115 million.

Last year Gareth Bale topped the list with his transfer to Real Madrid a whopping €198 million.

This news makes us feel rather bad about all the brass currently residing in our wallets ahead of Christmas.
