Liverpool want to offer striker Roberto Firmino a contract for the rest of his career

Roberto Firmino

He’s a very popular figure at Anfield.

Liverpool want to ward off potential future interest in Roberto Firmino by offering him a new contract. There is nothing unusual about that. What is startling, though, is that the proposed new deal will commit him to Anfield for the rest of his career in a kind of extreme reactionary move to Philippe Coutinho’s departure.

Firmino has been a hit since joining the Reds from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2015, scoring 37 goals in 199 appearances. This season has already been his most productive by a distance, with 16 in 27 games and, while his compatriot Coutinho could not resist the lure of Barcelona, Liverpool are determined to ensure that does not happen with the 26-year-old forward.

Alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Jurgen Klopp sees Firmino as a pivotal part to his future plans at Anfield. Firmino still has two years to run on his current deal but is set to be rewarded for his prolific form this season.

Firmino and Coutinho were friends on and off the pitch, with the former wishing his fellow countryman all the best with life at Barca.

“Liverpool is no longer the same without you my magical brother. I wish you infinite success, that you enjoy life and realise all your dreams brother. God is always protecting you and your whole family. It was an honour to play with a magician like you.”
