Jurgen Klopp utterly confused by Jordan Henderson criticism

Jack O'Toole

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson made his first start of 2018 on Tuesday in the Reds 3-0 win over Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Henderson returned to the Liverpool midfield after spending the last month sidelined with a hamstring injury. The club captain received 25 minutes in Liverpool’s FA Cup loss to West Brom last weekend and returned to a three-man midfield alongside James Milner and Emre Can.

The inclusion of both players saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum move to the bench for the win over Huddersfield but Klopp fails to understand why Henderson attracts such criticism.

“For me, it is quite difficult to talk about the obvious things,” said the Reds boss.

“Jordan Henderson is a very good footballer; he is an England international player and for us our skipper. He may (even) skipper England, I have no clue.

“How can he not be a brilliant player when he is a Liverpool player? If somebody doesn’t see his value, what can I do?

“Do you think after what I’ve said now they will see his value? I am not sure. I am happy he is back, very happy.”

Elsewhere Liverpool defender Joel Matip broke a club record for completing the most passes (161) in a single game by any Liverpool player in Premier League history.

Matip has completed more passes than any other Liverpool player this season, too, with 1369.
