Jordan Henderson’s Ajax future is already in doubt

Jordan Henderson could be heading for the exit door at Ajax already.

It’s been a truly disappointing season for the Dutch giants who, for the second season running, have failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The new Champions League format is also likely to see teams pocket £372m in prize money for the 36 teams involve and is sure to strengthen rivals in the Eredivisie.

According to The Athletic, the money they will miss out on is set to hit them hard and they will look to offload big earners such as Henderson and Steven Bergwijn in order to balance the books.

Ajax ideally want to keep both and don’t have any desire to sell, but know that they may be forced to cash in if an opportunity arrives.

Henderson only joined the club in January after terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq early.

His move to the Gulf Kingdom caused plenty of controversy at the time given his previous work as an advocate for LGBT rights only to move to a country where homosexuality is considered illegal and can even be punishable by death.

Additionally, the eye-watering reported £350,000-a-week wages he was said to be earning also caused some controversy.

Overall it’s been an incredibly frustrating season for the midfielder, who has made just seven appearances since his return to Europe.

In addition to their troubles on the pitch, Ajax are also looking for a new manager after Maurice Stejin was sacked in October.

John van’t Schip was placed in interim charge but no permanent replacement has been named. Graham Potter was offered the role but turned it down.
