Vicki Sparks made history on Wednesday as she became the first woman to commentate on a World Cup game on British TV.

It was a historic moment for sports broadcasting and a career milestone for Sparks. She was joined by Martin Keown on co-commentary for Morocco vs Portugal in which Portugal emerged the victors courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo header.

It didn’t appear to be to everybody’s tastes though. John Terry came under fire after uploading a photo to his Instagram story with the caption “having to watch this game with no volume”.

It was not clear what factor made Terry feel compelled to mute his television, but some inferred it as being a dig at Sparks’ commentary.

However, Terry later posted a video on his Instagram page strongly refuting any suggestions that he was criticising Sparks.

He said that he had just returned from holiday and the audio in his house wasn’t working at the time.
