“It’s still in their hands”, remarked the former Liverpool player.

Despite Arsenal failing to win for the third consecutive Premier League match on Friday night against bottom of the table Southampton, Jamie Carragher still believes that the Gunners can go on to win the title.

Having drawn 2-2 away to both Liverpool and West Ham, Mikel Arteta’s side were seeking a return to winning ways at the Emirates Stadium last night before next Wednesday’s crunch clash with title rivals Manchester City.

Although that plan went out the window just 30 seconds into the match, as Aaron Ramsdale’s misplaced pass saw Carlos Alcaraz give the Saints the lead in what eventually culminated in being yet another draw for Arsenal.

However, the pundit and former Liverpool captain believes that this youthful Arsenal side still have a chance at ending their club’s 19-year-long title drought.

Speaking in the aftermath of the game on Sky, Carragher said that “They’ve probably got to go to City now and get three points if they’re going to go on and win the league, but it is still in their hands”.

Arsenal at one stage in March were eight points clear of their Manchester rivals, albeit having played a game more. But Carragher stated that the fact they are still clinging on to top spot after no wins in their last three games, is a testament to their form during the rest of the season.

“It just goes to show how far ahead they were. They’ve dropped six points basically in the last three games and it’s still in their hands. So, they did have a really sizeable lead but they’re going to have to do something miraculous now between now and the end of the season”.

Carragher went on to add that despite the sub-par performances in their last number of outings, that the table-toppers are still capable of producing the form required to clinch the Premier League title.

“But we’ve seen them go on runs before, like off the back of losing to Manchester City which was a big disappointment, and I think they won the next seven games”, the former Champions League winner said.

However, Carragher also stated that if Arsenal are indeed going to best Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side, that they will have to start playing in a more assured manner.

“The way that game went tonight for Arsenal was exactly what they didn’t want. There was mistakes, they were emotional, the game was end-to-end. They just wanted to come here and win this game two or three nil like most people expected”, the former England international said.

With just six league games to go, Mikel Arteta’s side now travel to the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday knowing that a loss would surely hand their opponents a third consecutive Premier League title.
