Shane Long has become a genuine doubt for the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Austria.
The striker limped out of Southampton’s defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro after pulling up with a hamstring injury just after half-time.
Long had initially injured his hamstring in Ireland’s 3-1 victory over Moldova a fortnight ago and was making his return to action for the Saints in Italy but, again, was forced off early clutching the back of his leg.
Long has not enjoyed the greatest season for club, having failed to score so far this term, but he remains a key player for Martin O’Neill.
The 29-year-old scored in the most recent of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifiers and he continues to be Ireland’s first-choice striker.
The extent of the most recent hamstring issue is currently unknown but it’s very possible that he may not return in time for the next Ireland outing, which takes place on November 12.
Long also finds himself the subject of transfer interest from none other than Sunderland, who are also reportedly in the market for the forward’s international teammate Robbie Brady.

If Long is ruled out of Ireland’s trip to Vienna, it will place added pressure on the shoulders of the likes of Wes Hoolahan to come up with the creativity required to unlock the Austrian defence.
