GIF: Two-footed horror tackle not enough to warrant a yellow card from referee

Dries Mertins is lucky he can still walk

How on Earth did this deplorable tackle go unpunished.

It seems inappropriate to refer to the match between France and Belgium over the weekend as a friendly, after seeing what transpired on the pitch.

The lowest point of the match may have come in the 27th minute when Belgian winger Dries Mertens was the victim of a horrendous challenge from Benoît Trémoulinas.

The Frenchman violently launched himself towards Mertins with both feet forward, sending him crashing down to the turf writhing in agony.

Despite appearing to be a nailed on red card offence, the French left back received no warning for the incident. Fortunately though, Mertins was able to resume playing the match after receiving treatment for about a minute.
