Former Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Gary Neville has defended the club’s acquisition of Republic of Ireland striker Adam Rooney.
Rooney joined Salford City on Thursday and signed a three-year deal believed to be worth about £4,000 per week.
The Dubliner is Salford’s sixth signing of the summer following the recent acquisitions of Danny Lloyd, Nathan Pond, Chris Neal, Rory Gaffney and Danny Whitehead but the deal has drawn the ire of Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt who accused non-league Salford of trying to buy their way into the Football League.

Commenting on moving to Salford, Rooney said:
“I’ve been there [Aberdeen] for four-and-a-half years and I had a great time and I really enjoyed it but I just felt that it was time for a change.
“When I heard about the interest from Salford it was something that really intrigued me and I wanted to have a look at it. After speaking to the manager and the people involved, and the ambition of the club, it was something that I really wanted to be apart of.”
