Wesley Sneijder wallops home thunderbolt yet Mexico gain revenge

Revenge is being served in pile-driving fashion in Amsterdam

The Netherlands trail Mexico at the Amsterdam Arena yet if there is a prize for goal of the night it should go to Wesley Sneijder.

The Dutch midfielder unleashed a spectacular volley that levelled matters for his side just after half-time. There was no stopping this:

Carlos Vela gave Mexico the lead against a Robin van Persie-less Netherlands team at the Amsterdam Arena. The former Gunners striker received a pass from Héctor Herrera after eight minutes and, with no shot-blocking volunteers stepping out of the Dutch defence, unleashed a left-footed shot that gave Tim Krul no chance. The match is Vela’s first international appearance in more than three years.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar missed an absolute sitter in the first-half but the hosts were otherwise listless in attack as Mexico gained the early bragging rights. Daley Blind struck back for Holland on 75 minutes but Mexico held out to win 3-2.

There was bad news for Aston Villa supporters as Ron Vlaar limped off with an injury after just 23 minutes of play. Victory for the Mexicans would somewhat avenge their World Cup exit at the hands of The Netherlands during the summer.
