To be fair to the former Manchester United left back, he did make 28 appearances for one of the biggest clubs in world football and managed to score two goals under Alex Ferguson’s watchful gaze.
He’s also the proud owner of a Premier League medal – joining the likes of top flight legends like Jack Rodwell, Loic Remy and Luke Chadwick as holders of that honour.
You may have heard this but Liverpool have actually never won the Premier League and that means that the club’s favourite son, Steven Gerrard, is not a member of that club, which also boasts the likes of Kieran Richardson, Costel Pantilimon and Mattew Upson.
It’s a joke that’s done the rounds countless times as rival fans discovered that reminding Reds supporters of that fact is quite an efficient way of getting under their skin.
And Buttner, who recently made the move from Dynamo Moscow to SBV Vitesse, is also quite fond of rolling out that line when his legacy at Old Trafford is brought into question.
“I searched for it, I have played 30 games for United,” Buttner told De Telegraaf.
“Who can say they became PL champions? I can. Even Steven Gerrard can’t say that. I became a better footballer, played in the CL quarter-final against Robben’s Bayern Munich.
“No one will ever take that away from me.”
Buttner, while he may not go down as the most memorable United player in history, looks back fondly on his time in Manchester and even committed to permanently marking his tenure as a United player.
“I debuted in number 28 at United, scored and assisted,” he added. “Since then I kept number 28, I even have it tattooed on my wrist.”
