Fabio Borini’s transfer to AC Milan has provoked the reaction it deserves

He's landed on his feet

We all know Serie A isn’t what it used to be, but this is a strange one.

The Italian top flight was once the peak of club football, home to the best players in the world, and AC Milan were the best of the lot.

Arrigo Sacchi’s team in the late 1980s, and Fabio Capello’s in the 1990s, conquered Italian and European football, and had some of the best players of their generation in Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard.

There weren’t many players on the books that had just been relegated with Sunderland, but that’s about to change.

According to The Guardian, Fabio Borini is on the verge of joining Milan from Sunderland.

The 26-year-old Italian, who has scored seven goals in the last three seasons, is set to join the Serie A side on an initial one year loan, with the move to be made permanent next summer. The transfer will cost Milan £5.3m.

In Borini’s previous spell in Serie A, with Roma in the 2011/2012 season, the 26-year-old scored nine goals in 24 games, which has been most productive spell in his career.

Sunderland fans will confirm that he certainly hasn’t impressed in the Premier League, and he was one of many underperforming Black Cats’ players who made no impact as they were relegated last season.

The move will mean that Borini has now played for Chelsea, Liverpool, Roma and AC Milan, which isn’t a bad CV. If Borini can land a transfer to Milan after getting relegated with Sunderland, there’s surely a job out there for David Moyes.

Social media was stirred by the forward’s transfer, with the reaction verging between shock and finding the whole thing pretty funny.
