It would be the first punishment of its kind in English football’s top division.
The Premier League wants to impose a huge points deduction on Everton over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
The Telegraph reports that the Premier League has recommended a 12-point deduction on the Merseyside club, with the league apparently keen to come down hard on them in order to set a strong example to other sides.
If the Toffees – who have been in relegation battles for the last two seasons – were to be hit with such a punishment, it would put them bottom of the Premier League table on -5 points.
A points deduction of this magnitude would have comfortably relegated the club in each of the last two seasons.
Everton are currently 16th in the table.
Everton’s case is currently being reviewed by an independent commission, who will make the final decision over the club’s alleged breaching of profit and sustainability rules.
They are under investigation after recording financial losses of £371.8million over a three-year period, well over the permitted amount of £105 million set out by the Premier League.
Everton insist they have complied with rules on spending, arguing that exemptions, including ones relating to the coronavirus pandemic, will clear them of any wrongdoing.
If they were to be found guilty and handed a points deduction, it would be the first of its kind in England’s top division. The club could also be handed other sanctions, such as a fine or a transfer embargo and it would compound the misery on a team that has been struggling in recent years.
A decision on Everton’s case is expected later this year.
