Evan Ferguson first appearance for Roma might be the best debut we’ve ever seen

The Republic of Ireland striker joined Roma on a loan deal from Brighton

The early signs are good for Evan Ferguson as he looks to revitalise his career following the loan move to Roma from Brighton.

The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland striker completed his move to the Serie A side this week, and was thrown straight into the mix in a friendly against Serie D side UniPomezia.

It didn’t take long for Ferguson to get involved, scoring a hat-trick and assisting another goal in the first half.

He then produced a superb striker’s goal in the second half to make it four for the night in a 9-0 victory.

The footage of Ferguson’s fourth goal shows the striker at his very best, with a couple of deft touches in the box before a devastating left-foot finish.

This also completed his perfect hat-trick to add to his right-foot and headed finishes.

Ferguson is in need of playing time having scored just one goal in 21 Premier League appearances last season, following several years of injury issues.

He joined the Roma for what is reported to be a €3m loan fee, with a €37m option to buy, touched down on Sunday and was greeted by dozens of Roma fans singing his name.

Ferguson was also linked with Atalanta of Serie A, as well as Celtic and PSV Eindhoven.

Despite the injuries and lack of playing time, Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has continued to back Ferguson.

He repaid the faith with a crucial goal against Bulgaria in March.

Ferguson was again included in Hallgrimsson’s Ireland squad for the June international friendlies.

However, the Ireland manager did acknowledge in the lead up that Ferguson needed to find a home at club level, to keep making the squad.

Hallgrimsson said: “There will come a point when we cannot select players when they’re not playing.

“But it’s always about the individual, what positions, what depth we have in that position.”
