Dwight Yorke reveals he didn’t get a response over Aston Villa job

“I still haven’t been able to get a response.”

Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has revealed that he didn’t get a response from Aston Villa after submitting an application for the managerial vacancy recently filled by Steven Gerrard.

On Thursday (11 November), Villa confirmed the appointment of Gerrard as their new manager, following the sacking of Dean Smith on Sunday 7th November.

Gerrard joined Villa from Rangers, whom he led to their first league title in a decade last season – with the Midlands club agreeing to buy the ex-Liverpool man out of his contract with the Glasgow club, paying compensation in the region of £4 million.

The 41-year-old was the leading candidate following the dismissal of Smith, but Yorke – who has zero managerial experience – has revealed that he applied for the job, but didn’t receive a response.

“I have to say at this point in time, although I have a fantastic relationship with Wes [Edens] (Aston Villa co-owner), I still haven’t been able to get a response,” Yorke told Sky Sports.

“So even with the connection I’ve got, you would still like to at least say ‘well, it’s not possible, we have other options but maybe another time when the job probably does come available again’.

“But you would just like to be acknowledged, but you’re not even getting that.”

The former Villa striker – who scored 73 goals in 221 appearances during his career at Villa Park – also stated that he has to be ‘realistic’ about the difficultly he faces in securing a job.

He added: “I have to be realistic, I’ve got to be real to myself understanding the challenge that I face as an individual getting in.

“It’s not going to be as straight forward as some people have it, and that’s a fact.

“I’ve got to take that on board and look elsewhere and try to get some managerial experience somewhere else, and that is the challenge that I do face.”

Although Yorke is frustrated that he didn’t receive a response over the Aston Villa job, it is somewhat understandable considering his experience – or lack thereof.
