Dutch legend backs Memphis Depay to toughen up for Premier League

Head down and get to work

Memphis Depay is a man in need a of a hug.

The former PSV winger has endured a tough time in the Premier League for Manchester United since his major summer time move from Holland.

Life in England appears to have taken it’s toll on the winger  as he claimed earlier this week that he’s put on weight since his move to Old Trafford.

But help may be at hand in the form of Arjen Robben, who has offered his support, and some sagely advice, to the 21-year-old from his own experience signing for Chelsea over a decade ago.

The Bayern Munich man feels that Depay has the talent, but that mentally he needs to prove he’s ready for life in the Premier League and issued this warning to the player

“Of course I will give him advice. We try to help each other as players and the team to make steps.”

‘He is a talented player in a difficult situation, I can give him advice but the player has to cope with it, show strength and the right mentality.”

‘It is important in your development as a player, it is not always sunshine, you have difficult periods, especially when you are young.”

Robben signed for Chelsea from PSV when he was just 20, and admits that for Depay to succeed he will have to work hard and concentrate on proving himself to Louis van Gaal,

‘He has long way ahead and if he shows the right mentality, the talent is there. If he keeps working hard I am sure he can succeed.’
